Heavy Rain in Haiti Blamed for 8 Deaths
Haitian officials say eight people are dead and two missing after heavy rain pounded the southwest and caused widespread flooding on Saturday, weeks ahead of the typical start of the country's rainy season.

A steady rainfall pelted Petionville tent city, set up in the country's capitol, Port-au-Prince, in the wake of last month's devastating earthquake.

On Saturday night residents tried to keep dry by scooping out water using buckets and making sure the tops of their tents didn't become too heavy with pooled rainwater.

Others gathered under umbrellas and tarps.

Rain fell around Les Cayes on the country's southern peninsula. The civil protection department says a prison flooded and more than 400 prisoners were evacuated.

City delegate Josephe Mary Yves Aurbour says the dead from Saturday's storm include two adults and a child killed when water rushed into their home and swept them into a rain-swollen river.

In estimated 230-thousand people were killed in January's magnitude 7.0 quake, and at least a (m) million others were left homeless.

Hundreds of thousands of people are living outside or in inadequate shelter after their homes were destroyed.

Haiti's government has talked of trying to relocate earthquake victims to organised camps outside the capital, but so far none has been built.
