An anti-whaling activist is in custody after allegedly boarding a Japanese whaling ship from a jet ski in the Antactic sea.

Activist Peter Bethune, a member of the Sea Shepherd activist group, allegedly jumped on board the whaling vessel last month.

He was arrested by the Japanese coast guard and charged with illegally boarding the Japanese whaling vessel Sonan Maru 2 as Japan was conducting its annual whale hunt.

He's been custody on the ship ever since, as was taken off the vessel this week when it arrived in Tokyo.

Bethune apparently jumped on board the vessel to make a citizen's arrest of its captain and hand over a three-million-dollar bill for the destruction of the Andy Gil, the high-tech protest ship that Bethune once captained.

It sunk after colliding with the whaling ship.

If convicted, Bethune could face three years in prison and a fine of more than one-thousand-dollars.
